Starting out in the Business Analyst World

by Silas Reed
When starting out as a business analyst, it is important to make sure that you are involved with an organization that will allow you to use your personal strengths. What this means is that it does not make a whole lot of sense to get involved with a company that specializes in information technology if your degree is in business because you will not have the skills needed to advance within that organization. While the company might be able to find you an entry level position because of your education, you will have a lot of trouble getting one of the business analyst jobs that they will have to offer later on because you will not have the proper expertise.

One thing to look out for is the types of jobs that an organization is currently hiring for, as this will give you a good indication of where the company is headed. Since major corporations have so many different sectors, it might be possible to start off in one sector and then become a business analyst in another sector that suits your strengths later on. The key is to look at who the company is hiring and what their strengths are because if they are hiring many people with similar strengths to you, it might be a good indication that they will be specializing in something that you are good at shortly. While this will lead to a more competitive atmosphere, it should bring out the best in you if you truly want to succeed in that industry.

Another thing to make sure that you focus on in this field is improving your education level and picking up additional training if need be. For example, if everyone with a similar job to you within the organization has a BA, it might be wise for you to starting working on your Master's or even pick up a business diploma. Anything that you can do to separate yourself from everyone else will definitely go a long way in driving your career goals. These companies are looking for people with a vision who are not afraid of going after that vision at full speed, so improving your education is definitely a step in the right direction. There are even courses that give training that relates directly to business analyst jobs, which might be worth looking into if you want that extra advantage.

In the end, you will definitely have to work hard if you want to be a business analyst because these jobs are usually given to people who have shown the drive and the ability to compete at a high level. These companies want people who truly want to succeed, so show your organization that you are one of these people by working as hard as possible on everything that you do. While there is no surefire way to get one of these great jobs, you can definitely give yourself a good chance of achieving the career you have always wanted if you work hard enough at everything that you do.

Why You Should Never Miss a Company Holiday Party or Invitation to Your Boss’s Home
A few years ago, I spoke with a man (now retired) who had worked in a large corporation for forty years and in his last twenty years, he basically did nothing. He was paid very well and was more or less forgotten—doing very little of anything. He would show up at the office at 9:00 a.m. each day, try to look busy—do a task now and then—and then get in his car at 5:30 p.m. each evening and dr...
